The researchers wanted to see if air-source heat pumps worked in Minnesotas frigid wintersand whether using them would save any energy.
The answer was a resounding yesto both questions. Not only did heat pumps effectively heat the test homes throughout the winter, but the data from the test showed that Minnesota residents could reduce their heating energy usage by 35% to 50% by installing heat pumps (2).

But the point, ultimately, is that the heat pump you install this month is significantly different than the heat pumps that were available 15 years ago.
And that a new, optimized cold climate heat pump will work beautifully in freezing temperatures (especially if your home has been properly air-sealed and insulated).
Common questions about heat pumps in cold weatherYes, air source heat pumps work below 20 degrees Fahrenheitin fact, depending on the model you have, they can perform well below -15! If youre worriedor if you live in Antarcticayou can get a cold-climate heat pump with a supplemental heating system in case of emergencies (the vast majority of people never need it).
As long as your house is properly air-sealed and insulated, an air-source heat pump can perform well beyond temperatures of -13 degrees Fahrenheit! Some newer models can handle temps as low as -22 degrees. If you live in extreme cold, you may need to use supplemental heat, or whats called a dual-fuel system (or consider switching to a ground-source heat pump).
Thats worth an additional explanation: New air source heat pump models have been tested for use in extremely, extremely cold climates, providing uninterrupted heating in temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit. So if an experienced HVAC installer is claiming an air source heat pump cannot work for your area, they may not be informed about the amazing benefits of cold climate models just yet!
