When it comes to furnishing your home, few pieces are as versatile and essential as bar and counter stools. Whether you&#;re gathering around the kitchen island for a casual meal (like my family does pretty much most weekday nights), or creating a cozy breakfast area, the right stools can elevate both the style and functionality of your space. But with so many options ( at all different price points), how do you know which bar stool to buy.

I recently bought some new bar and counter stools. I love them. They are so easy to clean, fully adjustable, and at an amazing price point. I had the previous ones for quite some time and after a few paint jobs and support brackets coming loose, it was time. Read how to paint metal stools here.

Because the bar stools come in a pair (and I needed 5 stools total), I chose a slightly different counter stool with brass and black accents. Since the space is separated by a post, I could get away with it not matching the others.

In this post, I will outline a few things to consider when buying bar stools that are both stylish and comfortable.

How to find the Perfect Bar and Counter Stool

Height Matters

The first and most important consideration when buying bar stools is height. To ensure a comfortable seating experience, it&#;s essential to choose stools that are the correct height for your counter or bar top. Measure the height from the floor to the underside of your counter or bar, then subtract 10 to 12 inches to determine the ideal seat height for your stools. For standard kitchen counters, look for stools with a seat height of around 24 to 26 inches, while bar-height counters typically require stools with a seat height of 28 to 30 inches.

Style and Aesthetic

Once you&#;ve determined the right height for your stools, it&#;s time to consider the style and aesthetic that best complements your space. Consider factors such as materials, finishes, and design details &#; do you prefer sleek metal frames, warm wooden accents, or upholstered seats. Take cues from your existing decor and choose stools that seamlessly integrate with your overall design aesthetic.

Comfort is Key

Since you will be spending a fair amount of time sitting on your stools, it&#;s essential to choose a stool that provide adequate support and comfort. Look for stools with ergonomically designed seats, supportive backs, and footrests for added comfort.

Practical Consideration

In addition to style and comfort, it&#;s important to consider practical factors such as durability, ease of maintenance. Look for stools made from high-quality materials that can withstand daily wear and tear, especially if you have young children or pets. Search for easy-to-clean finishes and fabrics that can be wiped down or spot cleaned as needed. If space is at a premium, consider stackable or foldable stools that can be conveniently stored when not in use.

Test Before You Buy

Last but not least, it&#;s always a good idea to test out stools in person before making a purchase if you can. Visit furniture stores where you can sit in various styles and models to assess comfort, stability, and overall fit. Pay attention to details such as seat depth, back support, and stability &#; you&#;ll want stools that feel sturdy and secure when seated. If you order on-line like I did, order one or two and test them out before ordering additional stools.

Selecting the perfect bar and counter stools requires consideration of height, style, comfort, and practicality. By taking the time to measure your space, and test out different options, you can find the perfect bar stools for your home.

So pull up a seat&#;I mean stool and sit a while.

How to Shop for Bar Stools Online—and Never Regret ...

Sidling up to a kitchen island for a quick bite or (even better) a cold martini is made infinitely more fun when there&#;s a comfy bar stool at the ready. But picking out the right stool can be deceptively tricky. Sizing it, getting the correct number of seats, and then matching your kitchen&#;s vibe are just a few of the factors you need to consider.

Regardless of the style or material of bar stools you have your eye on, the first step is to determine whether you need counter stools or bar stools.

&#;This choice is determined by the height of the island&#;s surface,&#; says Nancy Gillespie, junior designer at KP Designs Decorating Den Interiors.

Counter stools are usually 24 to 26 inches from the floor to the seat while the bar type is typically higher, measuring 28 to 30 inches from floor to seat.

After you have that sorted, it&#;s time to decide on things like price, style, and materials. To help you purchase the best-looking kitchen bar stools from the comfort of your own couch, here&#;s our six-step guide, plus smart advice from design experts who have done it before.

1. Size them right

Inches matter when it comes to bar stools. The golden rule for spacing, according to Jamie Novak, organizing pro and author of &#;Keep This Toss That,&#; is 6 to 12 inches between the seat&#;s top and the bottom of the kitchen counter.

As for the width allowance for each stool, give about 15 inches per stool as your starting point (so a 5-foot counter can accommodate four stools). But this might work only if your bar stools are on the slender side. For wider seats or ones that swivel, allow for more elbow room.

&#;Larger stools that swivel and have arms will need about two feet per stool,&#; says Sara Chiarilli of Artful Conceptions.

2. Count your seats

If you&#;re having a hard time figuring out how many stools will fit around your counter, get out a few place mats.

&#;If you can only fit four mats comfortably, then that&#;s the number you should buy,&#; says Drew Henry of Design Dudes. &#;You want the bar to look full, but not crowded.&#;

Ideally there should be a spot for every member of the family, but truthfully, this probably isn&#;t necessary.

&#;Eating at the counter is more casual, so you won&#;t always have every person sitting down at the same time,&#; says Henry.

3. Set your budget

Trends change over time, so unless you&#;re certain your style will remain the same, opt for modestly priced bar stools so you can change them out.

&#;If you&#;re thinking you might replace them every couple of years, start with stools that are $100 each, but for ones you want to keep for life, expect to pay $500 to $1,500 per stool, or more,&#; says Chiarilli.

Simple metal stools run on the less expensive end, while upholstered or leather bar stools are going to cost much more.

4. Do a quality check

For the price you&#;re paying, you don&#;t want a stool that tips or seems flimsy. Comfort is key, followed by construction. Even if the stools you love are artful and match your decor, sitting on a bottom made from metal slats may hurt your tush.

That&#;s why you need to make sure the bar stools you buy are sturdy with a comfortable seat and footrest. The feeling of your feet dangling will get old very quickly!

&#;And skip swivel arms or backs if your counter surface is delicate, because all that spinning and banging will be an issue,&#; Novak says.

5. Consider your style

Have a modern home? Gillespie suggests acrylic stools with metal legs or backless industrial swivel stools for a downtown loft vibe. A traditional home might benefit from a wooden spindle-back stool. You can also add unexpected freshness to your kitchen with colorful stools or cushions.

Not sure which style is best for your home? Go for classic Parsons-style bar stools ($199.99, pier1.com), which are characterized by having four legs of equal length and thickness. Chiarilli says they&#;re the safest choice and have straight lines that go with just about any style.

6. Try &#;em in person

If you do have time and a department store in your area, Henry recommends going in person to try out stools and narrow down your preferences.

When you&#;re in the store, have a seat and decide if you like the look and feel. Lift them up and make sure they&#;re not too heavy, because you&#;ll have to move them around to sweep and mop the floor.

Once you understand what shape and style of bar stool you prefer, throw them in your shopping cart there, or take your newfound knowledge and shop at your favorite stores online.
